Why Summer Camp?
Ever heard the word Summer Camp and just got excited? Well, you might be asking "why would a grown adult think about Summer Camp?"
Summer Camp to me brings back so many memories. As a kid, I went to day camps in Buras, LA. It was a time to play, swim, do arts and crafts, eat snacks, and just have fun! As an adult, I have had the opportunity to work with children at summer camps and watch that same excitement in their eyes. It might be making a new friend that you will take with you into your "out of camp" life, learning how to canoe, ride a bike, make gimp, sing new songs, or just figure out something special about yourself.
"It's Called Camp Abbey" was that place for me for 10 summers. I was "Church Lady" on extended staff and I learned a great deal about myself at Camp Abbey. Although I do not actually work at Camp Abbey any longer, I love that kids are having the opportunity to grow up there and that the spirit of Camp Abbey lives on.
This past summer I was also introduced to another camp called Camp Kateri. This camp also offers an opportunity for kids to grow, learn and have fun.
Both camps offer the opportunity for children to meet God through others and what a better way to spend the Summer! I saw campers, counselors and staff who provided a safe and loving environment for kids. If you have children, please make certain they are given the opportunity to share a camp experience with other children. It will make such such a difference in their lives.
Here is a great article that you might find helpful! Why Kids Flourish At Camp
Until next Summer, Happy Camping!

What They Teach Us...
Grandparents are the greatest gift to this world. They love us, teach us, and in many ways, help us to dream. My Maw Maw and Paw Paw were great examples to us. Their work ethic was work hard for what you want in life. They taught us to be civic minded. We did community service by helping at church, helping in the community, hosting a community Easter Egg that our family sponsored and did all of the work for just to have something for everyone to come together and do as a community.
My Maw Maw is probably the reason I had a love for academics even though she did not graduate from high school. She was an advt reader and dreamed with me. She would tell me to see the world and to believe I could do anything I wanted to do.
I miss them on a a daily basis. There are little things that remind me of them: two doves that visit me, my niece Callie uses one of my Paw Paw's old canes to help her walk, the way my Mom takes care of my nieces, my sister's gift of making beautiful flower arrangements, my love for travel, sitting on a swing, going in the bayou, and the list goes on.
I hope that all the world has someone to call Maw Maw and Paw Paw even for a short time. It truly teaches you to appreciate the generation who gave us our present and future.
Peace and Love,
Mari Ann
Happy Birthday Maw Maw and Paw Paw |

The Power of Stories - Spending the Day With Incredible Women
I have always enjoyed working with women. I am passionate about women and the power we have to make the world a better place. I recently read the book Lean In. I had heard and read a great deal about it and it peaked my desire to take action. My sister is the Director at a retreat center called Rosaryville Spirit Life Center. She offered to sponsor a Women's Series so we made it happen!
On Friday June 7th, 13 women came together for a program called The Power of Stories. It was an incredible experience. The group was comprised of successful business owners, elected officials, volunteers, business women, young sorority women, and a recent high school graduate. I can honestly say, the day was more than I could have ever asked for. From the opening introductions, the interaction, honest emotion, and sharing between multiple generations of incredible women was a great learning experience for me and I believe for them as well.
Stories were shared about the gift and power of friendship, determination, change, community, and success. In some ways, I know I did not expect the pure honestly and compassion we experienced. That group of women, like all women, have the power to change the world around them.
Lesson Learned:
- When asked who you are - "I am a Leader" - no hesitation!
- Friendship can heal a broken heart
- Life allows us to give back when others have given to us
- As women we have so much to share and can learn from one another - generation to generation
- When given the opportunity to learn about yourself, take it.
No matter who you are, how old you are, or what you do in life, your story is worth telling and could change the life or lives of those you encounter. Tell your story, tell someone else's story - you never know when it could touch another. Celebrate being a woman and believe in the Power of Your Story!

Let's Start From The Beginning
I thought about what I wanted my first official blog to be and decided I needed to start at the beginning.
Considering this Sunday is Mother's Day, I thought I would start with the reason I am the person I am today - my Mom.
In our lives, there is that person who cares for us, loves us and gives us the tools and courage to navigate this journey of life. My Mom has been that person for me. She taught my sister and I that we had the ability to be and do whatever our talents and gifts would allow us to do.
We grew up in a small southern Louisiana town called Buras. Buras truly was one of those places where "everybody knows your name" and your business. My Mom had grown up there too - along with over 100 years of our family heritage being a part of that community. There is something to be said about growing up in a small town where the smell of water, fresh air, and a work hard ethic are a part of your everyday experience.
For the first 18 years of my life, I probably did not appreciate what growing up in a small town would mean to me later in life. My sister and I played outside, spent time with our grandparents, went on our Dad's shrimp boat for days, went to church, and spent most of our days with our family. We did not have cell phones, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, DVR, computers, iPads, etc. Technology consisted of phone plugged into the wall of our home and a TV - that's it. Sometimes I wish life was that simple today.
Throughout the years, I have had amazing experiences but my life took me away from my family. In 2005, my parents, my sister and her three children move to the town next to where I have been living since 1991 - they live in Ponchatoula and I live in Hammond - about 8 miles apart. I would never have realized what a gift that would become. I see them on a regular basis, I participate in their lives and they in mine, and I value the time we share.
One of the most challenging but special gifts I have been given is to watch my Mom take care of my Dad. My Dad, like more than 5 Million others (www.alz.org) has Alzheimer's Disease. My parents have been married for 49 years and yes, this is truly a testament to "in sickness and in health, till death do us part." My Mom is so brave. She has taken the love that she and my Dad have shared all these years and had to use as a foundation for her strength to live and work with him on a daily basis. She never knows what the days or nights will hold, and he often drives her crazy. One minute he acts like a little boy and other times he is angry because he knows he is sick and can't drive and do the things that he has always done. No matter what, my Mom cares for him.
In this world, we often want the next best thing. My parents, especially my Mom, have taught me especially in my adult life that the next best thing is the oldest thing in the world - LOVE! Love is what we are all looking for in this life and I want to thank my Mom for showing all of me love.
So this weekend, as we remember our moms, whether they gave birth to you and/or whether they raised you, please give that person a hug, say "I love you" and tell them thank you. Thank you Mom for being the best Mom I could have ever asked for.
